New for 2008 Ski to Sea Race

Equipment Changes - Racers who have been involved with the Ski to Sea for years should take the time to read about these changes in each Leg section. For safety purposes, the use of portable music devices (i.e.; iPods, MP3 players or any other music device with or without ear buds or headsets) is prohibited for all racers while they compete on ALL sections of the race.

Chip Timing Areas – The chip timing areas at each Leg exchange area will be well marked with orange traffic cones.

Awards Celebration (Click Here)- Hold off on attending any party at a team member’s house this year because you’ll want to be at our NEW Awards Celebration. The Celebration will be a “High-Energy, Multi-Media, Show Biz” experience that attendees will never forget!

NOOKSACK RIVER CLOSURE
The Nooksack River will be restricted to boaters on May 25th, between the hours of 07:00 until 17:30, Ski to Sea Race day.  The portion of the river that will be restricted is from the Everson Bridge to ¼ mile down river of the southern Hovander Park boundary. This portion of the river will only be open to canoes racing in the Ski to Sea, along with Whatcom County  Sheriff Marine Services, and Whatcom County Search and Rescue boats.

Google Map of Race Course  (Click Here) – All spectators are encouraged to visit the Ski to Sea website to see the race course’s 85 miles of terrain using an online mapping program.  This will allow you to obtain key spectator viewing areas.

Racer's Challenge: Harvey Haggard Spirit Award Spaghetti Dinner (Click Here) - In 1911, Harvey Haggard was winning the race by 40 minutes. Poor Harvey. He winds up in a train wreck, gets thrown from a horse, passes out twice in a car, and winds up in 2nd place.

If teams think they nary a chance to win the Grand Daddy of 'em all, the Ski to Sea Race, well, grab a chance to enter the history books the same way they did in 1911.

There will be an obstacle course that simulates what poor Harvey went through.  The winner is the person with the fastest time through the course.  The course will average 2 minutes.  The winner is also crowned King of Glacier for the day, in an official proclamation by the local community.

YouTube Video Contest (Click Here) - In 2008, the Ski to Sea Race will include a YouTube Video Contest.  Click here for complete rules and guidelines.

Volunteers are Needed (Click Here) – If you would like to volunteer for the Ski to Sea Festival, fill out the Volunteer Form on the website.  Without you, the Ski to Sea Festival could not take place as the ultimate Whatcom County community event.

Bibs and Helmets - Be sure to wear your bib number on the OUTSIDE of any article of clothing you wear so that you can be identified by the Official Race Photographer when they take your shot!  In addition, all bikers (Road Bike Leg and Mountain Bike Leg) will be provided with helmet stickers that match their bib numbers.

Ski to Sea Green Team (Click Here) - We have formed a “Ski to Sea Green Team” that will look at ways in which the Ski to Sea Race can reduce its carbon footprint during this year’s race and all future races.

Be Green on Race Day!
Sunday, May 25
Park & Ride really works for getting to “It All Ends in Fairhaven Festival” and the Marine Park Finish Line. Starting at 12 noon a bus leaves every 10 to 15 minutes from the 'C' parking lot (West College Way and Bill McDonald Parkway) on the south end of the Western Washington University campus and returns from Fairhaven just as often up to 8 pm. Free parking at the campus and only a dollar for the 5 minute ride. The stop in Fairhaven is at 12th and McKenzie, within one block of the party. Follow the signs from I-5 exit 252. It really works. Go Green.  Compliments of Old Fairhaven Association, Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce, WTA, and Western Washington University.

Be Green on Junior Race Day!
Saturday, May 17
Be Green! The Green Team for the Ski to Sea Race has arranged for a shuttle bus to run continuously from the Lincoln Creek Park and Ride (the old Samish Drive-In) to Lake Padden. All volunteers, parents, spectators, and racers are encouraged to use this shuttle and avoid the parking rush at Lake Padden. No charge for this shuttle. Compliments of Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
