5/17/09  Green Team Recycles Kayak Board Numbers
The Green Team for the Ski to Sea Race Committee is using recycled signage from local companies on the kayaks to assist in identification of team numbers on the water.  Racers should place the flexible white board on the top of their kayak, in the shape of a tent, just in front of the seating area.  Use duct tape to attach the number to the kayak, with the black lines representing duct tape.
Kayak White Board NumberRECYCYLE YOUR WHITE BOARD NUMBERS

The numbers on the white board will be reused for other community kayak races, so be sure to return the numbers to the Boy Scouts when the kayaker finishes the race.  Thanks for helping the race be more conscious of its effects on the environment. Thanks for Cascadia Construction for taking the time on the weekend to cut the signs.  (360) 319-9901 CascadiaConstruction@gmail.com

5/8/09 Girl Scout Troop Leaders Lead the Way on Ski to Sea Green Efforts

On May 7, Rodd Pemble from Sanitary Service Company (SSC), the official "Green" sponsor of the Ski to Sea, conducted a training session for the Troop Leaders of the Bellingham region.  The training focused on what materials can be recycled, composted, or is just plain garbage.  The Girl Scouts will be the Ski to Sea Recycle Monitors at all events of the Ski to Sea Festival that include the Jr Parade, Jr Race, Grand Parade, and the Big Race.  A big THANK YOU to the Girl Scouts for leading the way with the recycling efforts of the Ski to Sea!

4-29-09 Mountain Bike Course Volunteers Needed
Note from NorKa with a little info on the new course:

The new Ski to Sea mountain bike course is an actual mountain bike course. 14 miles in total with only 5 on actual roads, plus a bit of 'pavement' here and there.

NOTICE: There is NO PRACTICE on any portion of the mtn bike course till Saturday, May 23, 2009 from 12-4 pm.  You are breaking the law if you trespass onto private property including any land by the airport, and can be subject to prosecution.  Thank you.

Volunteers needed to put the finishing touches on the new Mountain Bike Course created by Norka Recreation.  Click Here for details.

Norka Recreation

Course Description

The course is a mix of many things...and reminds me of various courses I've raced around the world.  It will be a very challenging course for all riders though not overly technical.   It will have some very challenging sections where some people might be walking.  I have to reiterate that this is a true mountain bike course... Rigid bikes, arrow bars and slicks won't get you to the finish line.

An ideal bike would be a super light cross country full suspension rig (with lockouts) or a hardtail or a 29'er...running on an aggressive semi-slick tire.

The course has a little bit of everything: some mellow (and fast) greenway trials, quite a bit of mid-west style grassland riding, some urban assault pavement chasing, some classic northwest sections of mud, ladders and single track, and, my favorite... a little taste of Costa Rica over railroad ties mixed with some good northwest mud and handlebar grabbing saplings.

So please help us make this course happen.  The more bodies we get the smoother and safer this course will be for all of us.  And remember, most riders who do the Ski to Sea are not racers, they are locals who love to have fun and maybe riding this in a carrot costume.

This course is a work in progress and we will be making changes for the next couple of years as new access is negotiated, but this is a great start.  So bear with us, help us out and we'll keep making this thing happen.

So we'll see you at an upcoming trail party...and then again or race weekend.

And a little plug, next Saturday, May 9 is the Silver Lake Trials.  A
7 and 22 mile road TT course (in 2010 we'll be adding mtn bike, canoe, kayak and running).  Go to
www.RIDE542.comfor more info.

Cheers,

3-9-09  -  100 Tips and Techniques  from Adventures Northwest Magazine

Ski to Sea, the "Bellingham Olympics", irrefutably the greatest multi-sport relay race the world has ever known.  The key word being "race"---a day to challenge yourself against a field of hundreds, against the clock, against the not-always-helpful forces of nature, and ultimately a day to discover how hard you can push and how fast you can really go.  No matter what division you're in, or how many times you've done the race in the past, there are multiple ways to shave seconds or whole minutes off your time.

Northwest Adventures Magazine pressed some of the northwest's most passionate and respected athletes for their race knowledge and came up with this list of 100 tips and techniques.  Read it through, pick a handful and take action.  Then on May 24th go out and have the fastest Ski to Sea of your life!

2/24/09 Mountain Bike Course Progresses

The new Ski to Sea Mountain Bike course is being planned and mapped out, and all indications are that Mountain Bikers will really have something to talk about at their "After Race Parties" on race day.  The Race Committee, along with Norka Recreationis planning the route so that even more of it is "on trail or dirt" and less on roads.  Stay tuned for further details. In the meantime, check out these names of the teams that will be in the race: Treecycle  /  frazz love  /  Team Deinonychus.  Also, be sure to check out all the teams that are starting to build their own webpage as part of the Ski to Sea website: Team Web Pages

Pete Coy, Race Director, and Charlie Heggem, Norka Recreation, survey new Mountain Bike course.  Hazel is too young to ride, but wanted to come along to get a good idea of what she's up against in about 18 years!  Based on the expression on her face, she thinks the new course will be great.
