2009 Ski to Sea Race - 414 Teams (Excel File)

River Conditions.  Last year we had to cancel the canoe leg of the race because of dangerous river conditions.  We have teams training on the river every day and they are telling us that this year the river is just fine and the weather conditions for the days before the race indicate that we should not have to cancel this leg again this year.  So come prepared to race!

Team Sites.  This year we allowed teams to have their own free web sites on the Ski to Sea site where they could show their team spirit, brag about their past victories and promote their 2009 team.  If your team has not upgraded your team site the media will not know anything about you on race day and thus you will not get the coverage you and your sponsor deserve.

Timing Chips.  We have the same timing company this year with the same timing system as last year.  Some of the racers got so excited as they finished the race that they forgot to stoop down when they crossed the timing gates and thus got no time.  You are hereby reminded to stoop at the timing gate so you get a finish/start time for your leg of the race.  The timing gates are easy to see since they are a orange line on a mat with orange cones on either side.

The Ski to Sea Race had its origins from the 1911 Mount Baker Marathon.  In 1912, many companies wanted to support the marathon as evidenced in the 1912 Mt. Baker Marathon Race Guide.  Nearly 100 years later, not much has changed.  Below is a list of companies that have made the extra effort to ensure the race goes smoothly.  Next time you're in their store, give them a big "thanks" for supporting the Ski to Sea.

Adventures Northwest
Adventures NW Magazine- for providing 100 Tips for the Ski to Sea Race

ReStore

ReStore-for donating wood used on new mountain bike course. Some of the same people who are behind www.savewwufootball.com, the Boss Construction 4 Western Football Ski to Sea teams, and the 4 Western Football Valhalla & Valkyries teams, got together to make small beams from some very large beams.  Mark Wolken, Gary Grim, Ken Cox lifted, hauled, unloaded, and then pushed very carefully through Ken's table saw, 6"x12" and 6"x20" glue-lams.  When the dust settled, all that remained was the 4"x6" timbers that are now being installed on our Mtn. Bike course.

Award Plaques
The wood for the team award plaques is made from reclaimed Douglas Fir donated by Duluth Timber & Cascade Joinery and sawn by G.R. Plume Co.  The wood was originally milled over 100 years ago from trees that were then about 700 years old.

Ski to Sea Logo  Mountain Bike Course Practice

Practice on the new Mountain Bike Leg can take place on

Saturday, May 23, from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM ONLY

Starting in Hovander Park in Ferndale

The course is a mix of many things...and reminds me of various courses I've raced around the world.  It will be a very challenging course for all riders though not overly technical.   It will have some very challenging sections where some people might be walking.  I have to reiterate that this is a true mountain bike course... Rigid bikes, arrow bars and slicks won't get you to the finish line.

An ideal bike would be a super light cross country full suspension rig (with lockouts) or a hardtail or a 29'er...running on an aggressive semi-slick tire.

The course has a little bit of everything: some mellow (and fast) greenway trials, quite a bit of mid-west style grassland riding, some urban assault pavement chasing, some classic northwest sections of mud, ladders and single track, and, my favorite... a little taste of Costa Rica over railroad ties mixed with some good northwest mud and handlebar grabbing saplings.

Ski to Sea Logo Trader Joes Picks Up Packet Pickup
The  "Green Team" of Ski to Sea decided 2008 would be the last year that packet pickup would use white plastic garbage bags.  In 2009, Trader Joes stepped forward and donated the reusable shopping bag for packet pickup. Thanks to that, the Ski to Sea Race moves one step closer to becoming a sustainable event, one step at a time.

Don't forget to dispose of your water bottles by recycling them. It helps to keep our area beautiful.

Mt Baker Ski Area

Ski to Sea Logo Mt Baker Ski Area Course Grooming
The course at the Mt Baker Ski Area is groomed and being touched up daily and is ready for practice.  Have a great time on it, as they have been getting a few inches of snow every day it seems for past week.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIER
The race starts at 8:00 AM. Don’t jump the start! If you jump the starting gun, a five minute time penalty can be assigned. If you break a rule once underway, you risk disqualifying the entire team. No skating is allowed for approximately the first 100 yards.

DOWNHILL SKIER / SNOWBOARDER
The downhill skier/snowboarder must be in the staging area or he/she will be penalized by the race committee.  The skier will first ski directly down to the bottom of Chair 2, hike up Lower North to North Face, then hike to the top of Chair 1, ski down Gunner’s Ridge, down Blueberry Cat Track, down Home Run, down 7-Hills, and on to the finish line beside the ski shop.

Ski to Sea Logo Horizon Air and Ski to Sea Partnership
In 1987, Horizon Air and Bellingham (and the rest of Whatcom County) kicked off a partnership that’s still going strong.

And in that time it’s also grown to include our sister carrier, Alaska Airlines, which is launching nonstop service from Bellingham to Las Vegas starting June 25.

It all started modestly enough. Horizon operated its first flight from Bellingham International Airport with an 18-seat Metroliner turboprop headed to Seattle. In that first month, just 148 people boarded Horizon flights in Bellingham.

Since then, more than 1.3 million people have flown with us from Bellingham. As Bellingham has grown over the years, Horizon has kept pace, increasing capacity and evolving to much larger aircraft.

Our current five daily flights to Seattle are all operated with 76-seat Bombardier Q400s, the most technically advanced – and environmentally friendly – turboprop aircraft in the sky. In fact, Bellingham was the first city in Horizon’s route system where we converted all flights from 37-seat Q200s to the larger Q400s. By moving to the highly fuel-efficient Q400s, Horizon was able to increase total seating capacity to Seattle by 50 percent while reducing fares.

The word has spread about what our Bellingham customers have told us they’ve appreciated for so long. Horizon was named Regional Airline of the Year by Air Transport World magazine in 2007, and has also been ranked among the top 10 domestic airlines by Travel+Leisure magazine readers every year since 2004.

Although we’ve grown a lot in these years and greatly appreciate the increased recognition, we’ve never lost our focus on the motto we established early on: “It’s our privilege to serve you.”

Horizon’s service provides residents of Bellingham and British Columbia’s Lower Mainland area with frequent and convenient links to national and international transportation systems via Seattle. From there, you can connect to flights headed around the Northwest, across the country, or around the world on Horizon, Alaska or one of our many airline partners.

But the Horizon experience is about much more than getting you from point A to point B safely and reliably. Our aim is for the experience to be distinctly memorable – one that you will want to experience again and recommend to family and friends.

Our main ingredient is what we call Horizon Heart, something that is expressed and experienced in myriad ways. It takes many forms, from the sincere care and patience with which we assist a first-time traveler to the warm smile of recognition given to a frequent guest on an early-morning flight.

The Horizon team is made up of a diverse and talented group of individuals who share one trait: We are genuinely energized by serving others. And we are grateful to have the opportunity to express that innate passion for service through our work.

In addition, Horizon strives to be not just another business, but a good neighbor. For example, our Bellingham station helped organize a baby food drive at the airport last summer, with all donations going to the Bellingham Food Bank. Thanks to the efforts in combination with those of other airport tenants, more than 1,300 jars of baby food – plus monetary donations – were delivered to the food bank.

Horizon has enjoyed being a part of the Bellingham community, and we look forward to many more years together.
