Canoe Leg Start

Ski to Sea Logo Canoe Leg Has Extra Eyes on Water
Ski to Sea Canoe Leg racers can plan on additional safety support this year.
Customs and Border Protection, Air Marine Operations, will supply a helicopter to fly the Nooksack River between Everson and Hovander Park keeping a watch for paddlers in distress on race day. Pilots would then radio the on the water rescue boats and vector assistance to the paddlers.

Thank you CBP!

Ski to Sea Logo Race Guide for 2009
We have been notified by a few racers that the 2009 Race Guide for the Ski to Sea has a couple of pages in the guide that were placed in the wrong order.  After checking with our printer, we have been assured that this was a human error, and the the majority of race guides are printed correctly.  The printing company estimated that about 100 race guides have the wrong order of pages out of the total printing of 5,000.

If you were one of the inviduals who received a race guide with the pages in the wrong order and would like a replacement, please send an email to SkitoSea@Bellingham.com and we'll mail you a new one.

Ski to Sea Logo Racers and the Timing Chips
Greetings Ski to Sea Racers from the Crew of Milliseconds Sports Timing.  We are looking forward to coming to Bellingham and perfecting what we started last year, provided the river does not throw us a curveball!  A couple of things we would like to add to make your racing experience a great one, and your results the most accurate they can be.

1.  At the transition point/chip exchange/chip reading area, please slow down enough (you know the saying, "slow and steady wins the race") to make sure you go through the area calmly and efficiently.  Make sure the chip is down below knee level.  At Packet Pick-up there will be a mock timing point set up.  Please come and practice!  Our goal is to capture 100% of your split times and this requires the help of each and every one of you out on the course.  Last year we advised that you would hear a beep, as you went through that would alert you that your chip had registered.  We had no idea how loud it would be (nice work spectators!) and are working on getting speakers that will amplify the beep.  Again, this will all be set up at packet pick up, so come check it out!

2. The chip AND the strap it comes with must be turned in at the end of the race.  We understand that some of you may want to alter the way you carry the chip.  However you want to do this is fine by us as long as you don't alter the chip or strap themselves, and turn them both in at the end of the race.  The cost to replace the chip is $95.00, the strap is $5.00.  If you turn your strap in separate from the chip, please attach a note to it with your team number on it so we know who it came from.

We are looking forward to Ski to Sea again this year.  We timed 115+ races last year and there are no others like Ski to Sea.  It's a great race and we are proud to get to be a part of it!  See you in a few weeks!

Eric Ewing and the rest of the Milliseconds Crew!

Ski to Sea Logo Preview Mountain Bike Course by Volunteering

Volunteers Needed to Finish Mountain Bike Course

We're putting the finishing touches on the new Mountain Bike course for the Ski to Sea Race and we feel you're gonna LOVE IT!  We still need volunteers to help out before the race, and here's a chance to check it out before the ONLY practice session scheduled for Saturday, May 23, from 12 Noon-4 pm.

To see the details about volunteering and getting a peak at the new course, visit: http://www.skitosea.com/content/about/s2s_mtn_bike_volunteers.asp

The new Ski to Sea mountain bike course is an actual mountain bike course. 14 miles in total with only 5 on actual roads, plus a bit of "pavement" here and there.

NOTICE: DO NOT PRACTICE on any portion of the mtn bike course till Saturday, May 23, 2009 from 12-4 pm.  You are breaking the law if you trespass onto private property including any land by the airport, and can be subject to prosecution.  Thank you.

Course Design by Norka Recreation

The course is a mix of many things...and reminds me of various courses I've raced around the world.  It will be a very challenging course for all riders though not overly technical.   It will have some very challenging sections where some people might be walking.  I have to reiterate that this is a true mountain bike course... Rigid bikes, arrow bars and slicks won't get you to the finish line.

An ideal bike would be a super light cross country full suspension rig (with lockouts) or a hardtail or a 29'er...running on an aggressive semi-slick tire.

The course has a little bit of everything: some mellow (and fast) greenway trails, quite a bit of mid-west style grassland riding, some urban assault pavement chasing, some classic northwest sections of mud, ladders and single track, and, my favorite... a little taste of Costa Rica over railroad ties mixed with some good Northwest mud and handlebar grabbing saplings.

So please help us make this course happen.  The more bodies that come out to volunteer,  the smoother and safer this course will be for all of us.  And remember, most riders who do the Ski to Sea are not racers, they are locals who love to have fun and maybe riding this in a carrot costume.

If you want to volunteer, email Charlie Heggem with Norka Recreation

Horizon Air to Las Vegas

Ski to Sea Logo Horizon Air and Ski to Sea
In 1987, Horizon Air and Bellingham (and the rest of Whatcom County) kicked off a partnership that’s still going strong. And in that time it’s also grown to include our sister carrier, Alaska Airlines, which is launching nonstop service from Bellingham to Las Vegas starting June 25.

It all started modestly enough. Horizon operated its first flight from Bellingham International Airport with an 18-seat Metroliner turboprop headed to Seattle. In that first month, just 148 people boarded Horizon flights in Bellingham.

Since then, more than 1.3 million people have flown with us from Bellingham. As Bellingham has grown over the years, Horizon has kept pace, increasing capacity and evolving to much larger aircraft.

Our current five daily flights to Seattle are all operated with 76-seat Bombardier Q400s, the most technically advanced – and environmentally friendly – turboprop aircraft in the sky. In fact, Bellingham was the first city in Horizon’s route system where we converted all flights from 37-seat Q200s to the larger Q400s. By moving to the highly fuel-efficient Q400s, Horizon was able to increase total seating capacity to Seattle by 50 percent while reducing fares.

The word has spread about what our Bellingham customers have told us they’ve appreciated for so long. Horizon was named Regional Airline of the Year by Air Transport World magazine in 2007, and has also been ranked among the top 10 domestic airlines by Travel+Leisure magazine readers every year since 2004.

Although we’ve grown a lot in these years and greatly appreciate the increased recognition, we’ve never lost our focus on the motto we established early on: “It’s our privilege to serve you.”

Horizon’s service provides residents of Bellingham and British Columbia’s Lower Mainland area with frequent and convenient links to national and international transportation systems via Seattle. From there, you can connect to flights headed around the Northwest, across the country, or around the world on Horizon, Alaska or one of our many airline partners.

But the Horizon experience is about much more than getting you from point A to point B safely and reliably. Our aim is for the experience to be distinctly memorable – one that you will want to experience again and recommend to family and friends.

Our main ingredient is what we call Horizon Heart, something that is expressed and experienced in myriad ways. It takes many forms, from the sincere care and patience with which we assist a first-time traveler to the warm smile of recognition given to a frequent guest on an early-morning flight.

The Horizon team is made up of a diverse and talented group of individuals who share one trait: We are genuinely energized by serving others. And we are grateful to have the opportunity to express that innate passion for service through our work.

In addition, Horizon strives to be not just another business, but a good neighbor. For example, our Bellingham station helped organize a baby food drive at the airport last summer, with all donations going to the Bellingham Food Bank. Thanks to the efforts in combination with those of other airport tenants, more than 1,300 jars of baby food – plus monetary donations – were delivered to the food bank.

Horizon has enjoyed being a part of the Bellingham community, and we look forward to many more years together.
