The Ski to Sea Festival is a
Bellingham Chamber of Commerce & Industry
sponsored event.

The number of teams already registering is higher than at this point last year so it looks like we will have as many teams as we had last year (445) if not more. The Team Captain can still secure a slot in the race by submitting the application even if you do not have all of your racer positions filled. If you need to find a team or are looking for another team member, check out the “Message Board” on our web site. Race Day is May 24.

Wounded Warrier Disabled Sports Project
“If I Can Do This, I Can Do Anything!” sm
The Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project (http://www.dsusa.org/programs-wwdsp-about.html) and Operation Rebound (http://www.operationrebound.org/) are sponsoring a team from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, DC (WRAMC) to participate in this years Ski to Sea Festival. The team will be comprised of service members that have sustained permanent disabling injuries while serving in the line of duty overseas.
The WRAMC team needs your support! We are looking for area residents that can volunteer and offer a support vehicle for the race to provide transportation, carry equipment, act as a local guide and generally offer support for the team during the competition and the rest of their stay.
We Need Your Support
If you are interested in volunteering to support the WRAMC team please e-mail jray@dsusa.org with your availability and details of what you can provide.

Registration Options
This year we are offering you several new options when you register. For the first time we will have the finish times for each team member posted immediately on the timing web site so now we can offer to send you text messages as your teammates cross each of the seven finish lines. Many of the teams that have already registered have opted for this extra service. We are also offering a “green fee” option where you can agree to make a donation toward making the race greener than ever. We will donate 100% of these funds to local efforts aimed toward maintaining and improving the quality of the Whatcom County environment. So far over half of the registered teams have contributed toward this cause. Thank You!

Mountain Bike Course
Volunteers Needed to Finish Mountain Bike Course
If you have some spare time, and want to get an insider's point of view of the new course, come help us put the finishing touches on the course. Norka Recreation has designed the new course, and WHIMPs Mountain Bike Coalition (two local home grown Whatcom County organizations) is building the new routes, and they need your assistance. Please send an email to: SkitoSea@Bellingham.com if you are interested.
Work Party Dates:
Saturday, April 25, 10 AM-2 PM-Work party to clear course
Saturday, May 2, 10 AM-2 PM- Work party to clear course
The new mountain bike course is now set although much of it is on private land so you cannot practice the actual course before race weekend. Several parts of the route will be on new trails that are just now being created and several parts of the course are through wet areas where we need to build bridges. One of the last parts of the new course will be riding down railroad tracks over the rough ties. We will be posting the actual course on the web site but please, do not ride on the private property prior to the practice day (May 23) or we may lose permission to use that land and have to go back to county roads. The course is now 14 miles in length rather than 9 miles so the total race is now 90 miles in length.

Racer Packet Pickup (Map It)
Teams can pick up their race packets on Friday, May 22nd and Saturday May 23rd at a new location. We have a space inside the Bellis Fair Mall at I-5 and Meridian near Macy’s to handle the packet pickup this year. There is loads of free parking. The coupons and special offers that were in the race packets in recent years are now on line so if you are interested, go to Coupon Specials and get what you need. You will pick up your timing chip and be able to test it at the packet pickup station.

Ski to Sea Message Board
On the web site you will see various subjects where you can seek team members, find a team needing your skills, find equipment or learn more about each leg of the race. These comments are posted by racers or Ski to Sea Race enthusiasts so you can ask questions, provide ideas or comment on any part of the race. This free service is provided to make your race experience the best it can be.
Go to Message Board
The Message Board is an entirely separate registration from your Team Application. You must register to use the Message Board, as this keeps the spammers out. You can certainly use the same User ID and password, but they are two separate accounts/registrations.

Cars Off the Mountain
All Teams: Best Way to Carpool Up the Mountain for the Race
If you are looking for the best way to transport your team up the mountain, click on the link above.
Last year, cars were not allowed to leave the Mt. Baker Ski area until about 11:30 AM for safety reasons, and we heard from you that this was not acceptable. This year we plan to have law enforcement officers begin escorting cars off the mountain in groups at 9:30 AM and open the road to everybody at 10:30 AM. This way skiers and fans can make it down to some of the lower exchange areas to cheer for their teammates. Cars leaving the ski area will be instructed to stay in the left downhill lane so the runners can safely run in the right lane. We will also monitor the highway very closely and any runner cutting a corner or crossing the double yellow line will have their team disqualified from the race. After drivers pass the DOT exchange area (where the runners hand off to the road bikers) normal driving laws will be enforced, but drivers need to be aware that road bikers are racing down the same right lanes of the highway. Let's make safety the #1 Priority!

Green Team Information
Green Team Efforts
As part of our efforts to make the race “greener” we now have a green page on the web site. We are trying to recycle as much waste as possible. The blue recycle toters are for glass, plastic and metal and will have attendants to help you decide what can be recycled. The Compost bins are for all food, soiled paper and biodegradable plates & forks. We are also encouraging folks to carpool as much as possible and have posted several gas saving scenarios on the web site to suggest ways for you to minimize gas usage. Please visit the green page on the Ski to Sea web site and see if you can find a better way to conserve resources.

Team Pages
Every team can now create their own web site on the SkitoSea.com site. These will be used by the public and the media to get information about the teams and as a way for your team to gain some additional notoriety or thank your sponsor for their support. It is all free so all you need is come creativity and maybe a logo or photos of your team from prior years. There will be a prize for the most creative team page. |
